Mapping the world’s most popular websites for a web hosting company

What we did

For a client in the web hosting space, we analyzed web traffic estimates for thousands of domains around the globe to identify the most visited website in every country.

How we did it

Step 1: Data collection

We gathered the latest data from Semrush’s Open Trends Report, collecting estimated web traffic figures for websites across ‘All Industries' as well as within categories such as ‘Newspapers,’ ‘Banking,’ ‘Apparel and Fashion,’ and ‘Food & Beverages.’

Step 2: Data analysis

We ranked the data to identify the top most visited website in each country, with at least 1,000,000 internet users. We repeated this process across all categories in our dataset.

Step 3: Data visualization

We visualized our results in a series of illustrated maps with unique visuals for each continent, enabling us to segment our outreach by region.

Big Wins

The cherry on top

The in-house team at Hostinger has continued to update and relaunch this study every year, driving new links and citations to the page.

The campaign assets

"Not surprisingly, Google is the most popular website in the world, followed by YouTube and Facebook, but after that things are wide open.

According to the data gathered by Hostinger, the most visited website is Wikipedia, with 43 different countries visiting the online encyclopedia more than any other place on the web. Some of the countries that frequent Wikipedia include Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, France, Germany, India, Italy, Pakistan, Peru, Sweden, Uganda, and Ukraine."
