Revealing average U.S. house sizes for a leading home warranty company
What we did
For an leading home warranty company in the U.S., we analyzed over half a million real estate listings to create a comprehensive dataset of home sizes across the country.
How we did it
Step 1: Data collection
We build an initial dataset of over 500,000 listings of houses and condos for sale on Zillow, removing listings without size, price, or city.
Step 2: Data analysis
We grouped the data by location to calculate the median lot size and the median price per sq. ft. across each city and state. We also calculated the increase in median home size by comparing new homes (post-2018) and older homes (pre-2018).
Step 3: Data visualization
To visualize the data in an easy-to-digest way, we created a series of infographics and graphics to illustrate the difference in homes across states, allowing us to target reporters across both regional and national newspapers.

The cherry on top
American Home Shield (and the findings from this report) were cited in an academic study published by the open access, peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Built Environment. The resulting article was downloaded over 8,100 times and cited across five new academic papers since its publication in 2024.
The campaign assets
American Home Shield reviewed 506,374 listings of houses and condos for sale from Zillow to determine the results of its 2022 American Home Size Index, which showcased the cities in the United States with the biggest homes.
According to Census Bureau data, some key findings from the index showed that the average new homes in the U.S. are now more than 1,000 square feet bigger than in 1973.
